As beautiful as fresh flowers are to decorate a wedding, they do not fit in with everybody’s taste or budget. There are many elegant and beautiful ways to dress up your reception venue without using cut flowers. These are some wonderful choices for non-floral decorations for wedding receptions.

Candles: The flickering glow of candlelight will add romance to any style of wedding. They are generally quite affordable when compared to flowers, which makes candles an excellent option for the bride on a budget. When decorating with candles, the key is to use them in large numbers to really make a statement. While a couple of votive candles in the middle of a table for ten will not look very impressive, a collection of ten candles in different heights will look marvelous. You can also use one large pillar candle and display it in an interesting holder like a lantern or a hurricane to give it style and size. Candles can be used to decorate entryways, the bar, the cake table, and pretty much any part of the reception, so they are supremely versatile for any wedding.

Balloons: This type of non-floral reception decoration is a bit more controversial. Some people feel that balloons are a fantastic way to add color and fill up a large reception space in a festive way. Others believe that balloons are either too casual or too juvenile for an event where the bride is wearing an elegant bridal gown with gorgeous wedding jewelry. As a rule of thumb, balloons work best for informal or whimsical receptions. They will look more sophisticated if you use chic color palettes such as gray and yellow or jewel tones, rather than primary colors that will call to mind a child’s birthday party. Take a look at Martha Stewart’s website for some ideas on how to use balloons in a wedding-appropriate fashion.

Props: There is a big trend these days of using unique props for wedding decorations. They are fun because they are so different than the standard floral centerpiece. In addition, carefully selecting the props you use will allow you to express your personality and give your reception character. Ideas for cool props include stacks of vintage books, old birdcages, funky little sculptures, and large wicker balls. For areas other than the tabletops, consider bringing in a collection of old mirrors, colorful bunting, or even patterned fabric in cool picture frames. Use props that enhance the overall theme of your wedding, whether your style is a Roaring ’20s bridal gown with vintage wedding jewelry or an ultra modern loft wedding.

Fabric: Gorgeous fabrics can be used to truly transform your wedding venue without flowers. Fabrics are not generally used for centerpieces, so this idea will work best in combination with one of the other non-floral decor ideas. But you can do amazing things with fabrics around the reception site. Drape the ceiling in pink organza to cast a flattering romantic glow over the entire space. Hide ugly columns with elegant curtains. Decorate the front of the bar with a swag of material in your wedding colors. Because fabric effects are done on a large dramatic scale, you will only need a minimum of additional decorations to complete your reception decor.

Flowers certainly have their place in a wedding, but by no means should a bride feel like they are her only option. Non-floral decorations can be every bit as beautiful, and they can also be less expensive and more creative. Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Every couple want to share their special day with family and friends.  You should contact  parents and very important family members to make sure they will not have a conflict whit your wedding date. After selecting your bridal party you will want to notify them of the wedding date as soon as possible to make sure that every one will have time to make arraignments to attend all events leading to the wedding.

Most weddings take place on Saturday evenings during the wedding season.  Couples can save by selecting a Sunday wedding and serve the guest a Sunday brunch.  Most venues have reduced prices for weekdays and for weddings that take place during the off peak season.

Selecting your wedding date is very important because until this date is selected you can not book the church or reception site which means invitations can not be ordered and so forth. As the bridal party makes their way down the aisle the sweet fragrance of the wedding flowers fills the air and sets the stage for what is to come. Flowers on the pew ends, with church wedding flowers, or attached to a chair, for an outdoor wedding, not only add beauty and function to designated seating they can also evoke favorite memories from the family members and offer calming thoughts as they anxiously await the ceremony.

Such precious memories may be something as simple as a mother remembering the first flower her daughter gave her as a child or memories of the two of them sharing the same favorite flower. It may be the familiar fragrance that acts as aromatherapy and soothes the soul or just being surrounded by beautiful flowers marking the special occasion.

Pew ends provide a wonderful space to add drama and excitement. There are so many choices and styles and they are surprisingly easy to make. I’d like to share some ideas on my favorite designs to add a special touch to pew ends. I’ll include church wedding ideas as well as some outdoor ideas.

One of my favorite applications is to place a small arrangement on each pew and connect them with a floral garland between the pews. They don’t have to be very big arrangements to make a statement, but you can of course make them as big as you like.

The garlands can be removed on one side for seating and allowed to hang down from the center arrangement. They look especially good when matched with a halo for the flower girl. This type of pew marker also works well for outdoor seating. In a less formal setting, the bridal family could be seated from the outside row so the garland would not have to be removed.

Floral garlands can be made from any type of greenery. Boxwood, ming fern, ivy, and rosemary are good choices. Small flowers can be wired into the greenery or it can be left as it is. The pew markers can be arranged in a style that compliments the bridal bouquet.

Winter weddings offer an opportunity to transform the venue into a winter wonderland. Curly willow or any other type of twig can be grouped together and used as pew ends, centerpieces, wreaths, door arrangements, etc.

The twigs can be spray painted white or flocked. Glitter or tiny battery operated rice lights can be woven through the branches. Trees can be cut and potted in plaster of paris to match the pew ends. Tiny “trees” can be made from the twigs and used as table top decorations.

Fall pew ends look good with maple leaves and any type of autumn flower. Maple leaves can be scattered on table tops for the reception with candles to continue the theme. Acorns are great additions as they have long been used as a symbol of strength and fertility.

Pew ends for a beach or tropical wedding could include sea shells with orchids, anthurium, bird of paradise or ginger flowers. A garland of tropical flowers made from a Hawaiian lei would make a beautiful pew marker.

If you prefer a very tall pew marker, candle holders or topiaries can be used. Keep in mind, though, that a large pew end can make it difficult to seat the guests and may obstruct the view of the front of the church. They do work well for outdoor events especially if the area is an open space.

My preferred method is to use a small satin ribbon to attach the pew arrangements. Not only do they look better than a plastic one, but they prevent scratching the expensive church furniture. If that is not an option such as in using a bundle of twigs, a strip of soft cloth can be wrapped around the pew with a piece of tape over the cloth to hold the twigs. Ribbon can then be used to cover the cloth and tape.

Turn your church wedding flowers into something elegant and spectacular by making good use of church pew ends.
